What I didn't know about burnout:

Burnout has a scale.

The funny thing is that it actually starts out optimistic.

Dr. Carolyn Rubenstein shared a scale to showcase the journey high-performers take towards burnout.

Let's explore:

Stage 1: Minimal

You feel committed to work.
You have high-energy and high accomplishment.
You say "yes" a lot riding on the high of momentum.

Stage 2: Mild

The honeymoon phase ends.
You start to feel stressed regularly.
You notice some impact to well-being.
Optimism begins to fade slowly but surely.

Stage 3: Moderate

Chronic stress starts to kick in.
You start to isolate from others.
Now there's a noticeable impact on well-being.
You start to feel physical and emotional exhaustion.

Stage 4: Severe

You feel chronic stress most of the time.
You feel like output is not good enough.
Well-being is severely impacted.
It's difficult to push forward.

Stage 5: Debilitating

Chronic stress is hard to manage.
All areas of life suffer significantly.
You need professional intervention.

Where are you on the scale?

Burnout's effect on Managers

And remember, burnout doesn't just impact employees. A Fast Company article from last week highlights that overworked managers are ghosting their teams.

According to a recent survey conducted by Clarify Capital, two in five employees say they have been “ghosted”—or left without a timely response to a direct inquiry—by their manager.

Those who have also reported being 67% more overworked and 60% more burnt out than those who haven’t.

Burnout is on so many levels -- but I do believe that the compounded responsibilities of middle managers have been too heavy a weight.

Bonus:

If I started my career again, this is how I’d prevent burnout:

1/ Set boundaries early and firmly

Setting boundaries ≠ low performance

I’d set clear boundaries between work and home.

Includes:

↳ Setting specific hours and sticking to them
↳ Establishing hours with no “work” comms
↳ Learn to say “no” or at least “not now”

2/ Prioritize myself

I spent so much of my career worrying about everyone else - their thoughts & feelings.

↳ I want my boss to be happy and proud
↳ I want my peers to like and respect me
↳ I want my team to love having me as a boss

I’d do this at the detriment of my own health.

I’d go back and take all those missed lunches.

3/ Acknowledge the signs

I wasn’t completely oblivious that certain habits were bad for me. I just ignored them.

If I went back, I’d do more to:

↳ Slow down
↳ Listen to my body
↳ Give myself some breaks

For real, do not skip lunch!

4/ Delegate and trust others

This was hard for me.

↳ I’m a perfectionist and high-achiever.
↳ I can control the output if I control the process!
↳ I don’t want to burden anyone else!

But the truth:

My teams thrived with taking on more responsibilities and a chance to show off their potential.

I did better when I was able to focus on the top 3 main priorities than everything else.

Win/win.

5/ Truly disconnect on vacation

Every vacation, family event, or time away from work still had my work phone as an extended appendage on my body.

I was physically around but I wasn’t present.

Head in the clouds floating in slide decks.

Then I’d wonder why I never felt refreshed.

6/ Be more open

I was the safe space for many. Yet, I never opened up about my issues.

Acknowledging burnout was admitting weakness.

Professional support would’ve helped wonders.

7/ Do regular check-ins with myself

I was moving so fast that I never once stopped to question:

↳ Do I enjoy what I’m doing?
↳ Is it worth the sacrifices I’m making?
↳ Does this work match my values?
↳ What should I keep doing?
↳ What can I do better?

I'm currently reading: The Myth of Normal by Gabor Mate, MD. And it is absolutely amazing. In it renowned physician Gabor Maté critically examines how Western society's definition of health neglects the profound impact of trauma, stress, and modern living on our well-being, leading to rising chronic illness and mental health issues. Through decades of clinical experience, Maté offers a compassionate guide to understanding and healing, challenging the myths that underpin our current healthcare systems. Worth a read!

2 years ago, I quit my VP job because of burnout. I didn’t know what I needed. I just knew that something had to change. My life was a mix of this: Full calendars Missed milestones of my daughter Working late nights and weekends A lot of skipped lunches for meetings Chronic insomnia because I lived in stress No matter what I tried, nothing worked. Not vacations. Not a weekend off. Not even disconnecting from work. Even if I felt temporary relief, it would come crashing back the minute I was...
